Withholding Breakdown
How this calculator works
Withholding ≠ actual tax. This shows what your employer WITHHOLDS from your bonus check. At year-end filing, your actual tax is based on your marginal bracket — could result in a refund (if 22% withholding exceeds your bracket) or owed amount (if your bracket exceeds 22%).
Federal — Percentage Method
Most employers use the percentage method: 22% flat on bonuses up to $1M cumulative within calendar year, 37% above. Aggregate method (alternative) withholds at marginal rate based on combined paycheck — used by some smaller employers.
State supplemental rates
Each state with income tax has its own supplemental wage rate. California 10.23%, New York 11.7%, Hawaii 7.6%. No-tax states: TX, FL, NV, WA, AK, SD, WY, TN.
FICA + Additional Medicare
Social Security 6.2% capped at $176,100/yr (2026 wage base). If your salary already exceeded the cap, no SS withholding on the bonus. Medicare 1.45% always applies. Additional Medicare 0.9% on amounts over $200k single / $250k MFJ.
